Kiszla: Jeudy! Jeudy! Jeudy! Broncos get lucky, make Grade A pick and land best receiver in NFL draft. – The Denver Post

Not to suggest the Broncos and John Elway got lucky with the 15th pick in the NFL draft, but when Denver was on the clock, any Goober could’ve screamed the obvious choice:

Jeudy! Jeudy! Jeudy!

Is anyone not excited that Alabama receiver Jerry Jeudy, who’s going to be Drew Lock’s new best friend, virtually fell into Elway’s lap in the league’s virtual draft, which was broadcast — live! — from commissioner Roger Goodell’s basement.

Moments after the selection was in, Denver star Courtland Sutton reacted with just one word that pretty much summarized the excitement in Broncos Country: “Oowwweeeee!”

Elway made a Grade A selection in Jeudy.

The Broncos also made a major upgrade at receiver. Jeudy will be more than a complement to Sutton.

While Sutton had a Pro Bowl caliber season in 2019, with 72 catches for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns, there’s every reason to believe Jeudy could lead the team in all three of those receiving categories in 2020, as a bona fide No. 1 target for Lock.

In an incredibly gifted and unfathomably deep class of pass-catching prospects, which saw Alabama teammate Henry Ruggs and a total of six receivers taken during the opening round, there’s little doubt in Jeudy’s mind that Denver made the best choice.

“I feel like I’m the best,” said Jeudy, who scored 24 touchdowns on 145 catches during his final two seasons with the Crimson Tide.

Not to brag or nuthin’, because I would never do that. But while other draftniks suggested Ruggs was the Alabama receiver the Broncos really wanted, or hinted Denver would have to trade up to land Jeudy, this knucklehead predicted he would fall light as a feather into Elway’s grasp at No. 15.

“It was a long couple hours waiting to see if he was going to get there,” Elway said.

Patience is a virtue. So give Elway — who refused to surrender any of his stockpile of picks in order to move up a spot or three in the opening round — and me credit for being OK boomers who are smarter than we look.

How do you like my Cary Grant impersonation now?

Jeudy! Jeudy! Jeudy!

Maybe Elway should stay at home on draft night more often, because nearly everything about the greatest night of vaudeville in sports turned out snazzy and delectable for Broncos Country.

Instead of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa landing in the AFC West, Miami stole him from under the Chargers’ nose, leaving them with Justin Herbert, who has more Christian Ponder than Tom Brady tendencies. Even better, there was no run on wide receivers early, and when Las Vegas finally grabbed one at No. 12, they did a very Rai-duhs thing and couldn’t resist the shiny object that is Ruggs, who was clearly the WR2 in the eyes of Tagovailoa when he ran the Alabama offense.

In Jeudy, the Broncos landed a refined route-runner who creates separation both with his athleticism and savvy manipulation of the defense. In Ruggs, the Raiders got a player who wore a robe on draft night, as if he were just rolling out of bed.

Hey, we’ve all been living in our comfies during the age of coronavirus. But if you’re going to show up to the draft in sleepwear, show a little style. If you can’t find one of those classic Fred Sanford robes, dummy, order a Hugh Hefner smoking jacket.

“It’s going to be fun playing against him two times per year,” said Jeudy, proud he and Ruggs have a shot to enhance Bama’s reputation as Wide Receiver U., joining Julio Jones and Amari Cooper in the NFL ranks.

I might not know much about football. I do know my movie history, though. Grant did not actually utter the quote for which he became most famous in any flick. But when we’re all able to gather together again for a Broncos home game, I hope every time Jeudy scores a touchdown, the Broncos crack stadium entertainment crew puts a classic clip from the “Andy Griffith Show” on the scoreboard, so we can all hear Goober chant:

Jeudy! Jeudy! Jeudy!
